This gorgeous bayside view and the Ferry Building was taken from our hotel room at the Hyatt Regency Embarcadero.
The immense clock tower replicates a bell tower constructed in the 12th century of Spain's Seville Cathedral and is a welcome to those entering the Bay. It was a mannerly clock, only marking the hours before and after bedtime!(picture 2)
Architect, A. Page Brown designed this building, which the distinction of having the largest foundation (660 feet) of any building over water in the world. I think it is an extremely striking structure and certainly an attraction worthy of preservation! It has withstood two earthquakes: in 1906 and 1989.
The Ferry Building opened in 1898 and became a major transportation hub. This new building replaced the old ferry house built in 1875. The ferry was the only way travelers could reach the city up until the 1930's, unless they lived on the peninsula itself. (con't)
