"Safer than hitchhiking but still free/cheap" New Zealand Transportation Tip by marcia1

Some NZ environmentalists use a new website called Car Share to post trips they are about to make in vehicles that will have seats free for passengers. The idea is that if two people are headed to a certain city on the same day, then it's better for the planet if they travel together rather than each taking an empty car. So people advertise the rides they are about to make, and would-be passengers can contact them to ask for a lift. Likewise, as a passenger you can post a trip you are HOPING to make, and with any luck someone will contact you to offer a ride. The website is very functional with various search filters. As an example, at the time of writing, I see advertised regular return trips between Nelson (near the port of Picton) and Queenstown (a major tourist destination). This is a long car journey that you would pay heaps for if going by plane or bus, or even your own rental vehicle. With Car Share, the driver may ask for no money or may simply ask you to contribute something towards the cost of petrol. Tourists can also use Car Share themselves to offer rides to others in their rental vehicle. The benefits are: * A great way to meet the locals. * For environmentalists, a great way to meet like-minded travellers. * Safer than hitch-hiking because you have several opportunities to cancel arrangements in advance if you ever feel uneasy, and women can select women drivers. * Allows for the possibility of guaranteeing a ride whereas with hitching, you might spend all night outside, in the rain, waiting and hopeful. * It really is better for the environment.
I have just used this myself to travel from Dunedin to Christchurch, so I am not just making up these benefits! I found it a rewarding, pleasant experience.
