"Algarve flora" Portugal Things to Do Tip by magor65

Something that I much enjoyed during my stay in Algarve was admiring the rich flora of the region. I was quite familiar with some plants, f.e. ubiquitous oleanders, gorgeous bougainvillea and begonias in the gardens or orange and lemon trees. But still I couldn't help stopping to feast my eyes on them.
What a pity I couldn't see almond trees in blossom. As the legend goes one of the Moorish kings married a princess who came from the North. The young woman missed the snow-covered summits of her country and felt very unhappy. The king told his servants to plant thousands of almond trees near the palace and one February morning he asked his wife to come up to a window. She did it and saw dancing 'snow flakes' falling down from the trees. She felt better at once and they lived happily ever after.
Of course there were also quite a few 'new' plants for me. The example can be a jacaranda tree with beautiful lilac blossom or cork oaks so typical for Portugal.
