Mosteiro dos Jeronimos is another of Lisbon's jewels inscribed in the UNESCO Cultural Heritage list.
Prior to the monastery there used to be a hermitage in this place. It was there that Vasco da Gama spent his last night in 1497 before the expedition that resulted in the discovery of the sea route to India. King Manuel I vowed to build a monastery if the plans succeeded. He fulfilled his promise generously, luckily it coincided with the greatest prosperity of his kingdom.
It took almost 100 years to complete the monastery but in my opinion the result surpasses all other architectural masterpieces of Portugal. The Manueline style is here at its height. And the best of the best are definitely two-storey cloisters. The richness of decorations is incredible: plant ornaments, twisted ropes, corals and shells, geometrical figures fantasy creatures cover the arches, columns and pillars. You can't take everything in at once. To appreciate the uniqueness of the place you need some time to study the details.
Walking around I came across the tomb of Fernando Pessoa. How true his words sound in this place: "God wants, man dreams, work of art is born".
Entrance ticket: 4.50 EURO
Address: Praca do Imperio
