Built by the Visigoths in the 5th century, enlarged by the Moors in the 9th century, St George's castle became the royal palace of Portugese kings in 1147, after the victory over Moors. It was the royal seat until the times of king Manuel I (beginning of the 16th century), who decided to build a more comfortable palace in the place known today as Praca do Comercio.
Not much of St George's castle is preserved from the past - some ramparts, towers and fragments of the palace, but a place is a sort of green oasis offering unforgettable panoramic views of Lisbon and the river Tagus which is sometimes called "mar de palha" (straw sea), because of the way it glitters in the sun. In the gardens you can spot musicians playing nostalgic music or painters with their easel. There is also a cafe and a restaurant so it is a good place to relax and 'load your batteries' before you continue sightseeing.
