The prospectors camp was always growing and changing. As word of gold strikes spread, more and more hopefuls would pour into the area, some with camel teams which carried water, food and tools. Others travelled by horses and wagons or even just wheeled in wheelbarrows of their belongings. Home was canvas tents with only the red earth for flooring and cooking was done over open fires. Water was scarce and during the summer the prospectors had to deal with the heat and flies. From these ever growing camps came stores, banks and hotels until a small town was formed.
