"Take a Break" Piazza - Squares Tip by SJTravel

Piazza - Squares, Florence: 10 reviews and 16 photos

If you have been walking and sightseeing all day, I recommend taking a nice break under the Loggia near Palazzo Vechio and the Uffizi. There, you can sit under the loggia's roof and get away from the sun and give your feet a rest. If you are lucky, then there may be an art class learning about one of the sculptures in the loggia and you can sit close enough to listen. If not, pick a sculpture and sit and look at it for a bit. Or you can sit facing the piazza in front of the loggia and people watch. Either way, it will give a welcome respite from a long day of sightseeing. If you are an artist, you can take out your own sketchpad and draw one of the sculptures. I sat and journaled for a bit. It was nice to be able to at least jot down some notes from my busy day so I wouldn't forget all that I had seen. You can even use the time to look at a map or your guidebook to plan your next destination. Either way, the loggia is a nice place to relax a bit out of the sun and just enjoy Florence. One thing you should note is that you cannot eat or drink under there. There are guards that make sure you are not disobeying the rules and they are quite loud in letting you know what you can and cannot do. Even if you don't want to relax under the loggia, I still recommend a visit. Michaelangelo's "Rape of the Sabines" is such a powerful sculpture in and of itself, it is definitely worth the trip. It is so life-like, where the mans hand is on the Sabine's thigh is so real, the sculpture indents as skin would.
