The Aleppo souk fits the romanticised image of a Middle Eastern bazaar in every possible way. The grid of narrow alleys and the life within it have not changed in centuries and will hopefully stay the same for years to come. I found Aleppo's souk to be the best I've seen in the middle east, both in terms of charm and quality of merchandise. It is a true shopper's delight with everything from silk scarves to shishas, antiques to spices, jewellery to food products, and western clothes to traditional outfits, not to mention Aleppine soap. One would be best served by dedicating an entire day to wandering and getting lost in the labyrinth of alleys. Likely a shopkeeper or two will offer you tea with mint. Do accept the offer and do not rush to leave. The attached photos contain some scenes from the souk, but for more photos, check out the travelogue: "Shopping in the Aleppo Souk, and for its history, turn to the tip in the list of "Things To Do" on this Aleppo page.
