      ENGLISH HARBOUR AND DOCKYARD OVERVIEW.

WHEN IN ANTIGUA MAKE SURE YOU TAKE TIME OUT TO VISIT ONE OF THE MOST HISTORIC SITES ON THE ISLAND.
FOR NEARLY ONE HUNDRED YEARS FROM 1713 THE CARIBBEAN WAS A SCENE OF STRUGGLE FOR NAVAL SUPREMACY IN WHICH BRITAIN-SPAIN-PORTUGAL AND FRANCE WERE COMPETITORS.
THE NAME NELSON'S DOCKYARD DERIVED FROM THE FACT THAT CAPTAIN NELSON WAS MADE TEMPORARY COMMANDER OF THE LEEWARD ISLANDS STATION FROM 1784-1787.
NELSONS DOCKYARD IS IN ENGLISH HARBOUR AND THE HARBOUR GREW IN IMPORTANCE IN THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY NOT ONLY AS A PORT BUT ALSO AS A HURRICANE REFUGE.
BECAUSE THIS WAS THE ONLY SAFE ALL YEAR ROUND HARBOUR IN THE CARIBBEAN IT MEANT THAT BRITAIN COULD REPAIR AND KEEP A SQUADRON OF SHIPS CONTINUALLY IN THE CARIBBEAN, THUS MAINTAINING NAVAL SUPERIORITY OVER THE ENEMY.
SOME WELL KNOWN ADMIRALS WHO USED THE HARBOUR WERE RODNEY,HOOD,NELSON,AND LEWIS. THE LOVELY BUILDINGS YOU SEE IN THE DOCKYARD DATE BACK TO 1785.
THESE INCLUDE THE ADMIRALS HOUSE {NOW A GIFT SHOP} ADMIRALS KITCHEN {DOCKYARD BAKERY} AND THE COPPER AND LUMBER STORE {HOTEL AND RESTAURANT}
THE DOCKYARD FELL INTO GRADUAL DISUSE AND BY 1889 THE ROYAL NAVY CLOSED IT.
THE FRIENDS OF ENGLISH HARBOUR FORMED IN 1951, RECONSTRUCTED THE DOCKYARD AND OFFICALLY REOPENED IT IN 1961 AFTER MUCH WORK.
ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT THE RECONSTRUCTION WORK IS STUNNING AND WELL WORTH A TRIP TO SEE IT,MAKE SURE YOU VISIT THE MUSEUM. WE COULD HAVE STAYED A LOT LONGER TO LOOK AROUND, SO GIVE YOURSELF PLENTY OF TIME TO VIEW THIS PART OF BRITISH NAVAL HISTORY.. I THINK YOU'LL LOVE IT.
