At about 80 rooms, the White House Ruins is one of the largest ruins in the canyon and was occupied between 1040 AD and 1275 AD. The Navajo call these ruins Kinii'Naígai. This is the only access into the canyon without a guide, and is a 600 foot descent down a 2 1/2 mile switchback trail, across Chinle Wash, to the White House ruins. Trail rating is moderately strenuous. Constructed both on the canyon floor and in a cave above, you aren't allowed to enter the ruins but you will be close enough for a better look than from the overlook above. Do not deviate from the trail. Out of respect to the Navajo People living in the area, do not deviate from the trail and do not take pictures of the Navajo or their hogans without asking and getting permission.
