The last overlook on the South Rim drive is Spider Rock overlook. Spider Rock is an impressive 850 foot high sandstone formation shaped like two towers rising from the canyon floor. This site has special significance for the Navajo; because it is the home of the Spider Woman. According to legend; the Spider Woman is a deity possessed by supernatural power at the time of creation. At that time, monsters roamed the land and killed many people. Spider Woman defended the people and was established as one of their most important deities. She chose the top of Spider Rock for her home. Spider Woman taught the Navajo the art of weaving.
