"Modernist Barcelona: El Liceu!" Gran Teatre Del Liceu Tip by Elisabcn
Gran Teatre Del Liceu, Barcelona: 17 reviews and 28 photos
Built on the site of a Trinitan Monastery (again), its nuns predicted three fires here. The first Liceu was built in 1874 and it was destroyed by fire three times, last time in 1994 (i was there and i could see that disaster :-(). Very simple on the exterior, on the interior it is one of the most lavishly decorated opera houses in the world. The Liceu, which raised the first curtain with Anna Bolena by Donizetti, was one of "the must" of the good families of Barcelona in the XIX century but nowadays has become more popular and prices are not very expensive (in relation to other opera theatres in the world). Another sad chapter of this theatre was the bomb that fell inside (really there were two bombs but one didn't explode) during the opera Guglielmo Tell of Rossini on 7th november 1893. There were 20deaths that night
In Liceu you can see all the operas of all the main composers but Liceu has always been known as a "wagnerian temple"
