"Water Tanks On Some Buildings - WHY?" Information - Sources Tip by Mikebb

Walking around New York City you will see on older buidings water tanks on any building over 6 levels high but you will not see tanks on modern buildings. Why is this?
Our guide on a walking tour around the Flatiron District gave us the answer. New York has poor water pressure and Fire Regularations require water tanks on all buildings of 6 levels and over to work the fire sprinkler system in case of fire. The tanks over time become an eyesore so more recent buildings, including skyscrapers, have the tanks but they are enclosed.
