"The Millennium Bridge" Millennium Bridge Tip by steventilly

  Millennium Bridge, Newcastle
by steventilly

Favorite thing: Stricly speaking it's Gateshead's bridge (that's the town on the other bank - they paid for it!). Basically it links the two quaysides, and Gateshead is also building an arts centre into the old and histioric Baltic Mill just across the bridge.

The bridge is for pedestrians and cyclists and has a unique and interesting feature: When ships need to pass under it, it rotates by 45 degrees to lift the walkway into the air to give clearance for the boats. Because of this it is said to resemble a 'blinking eye' and is affectinately known as 'the blinking bridge'.

Directions: Crosses the Tyne between Newcastle and Gateshead, at the eastern end of the Quayside
