The cathedral church of Sveta Sofija (The Holy Wisdom), which was the seat of the Archbishopric of Ohrid for several centuries is the oldest surviving church in Ohrid. The unique gallery of paintings from the period between the 11th and 14th centuries, it is one of the most important medieval monuments in Ohrid and Republic of Macedonia. The church of Sveta Sofija is built on the foundations of an Early Christian basilica. Fragments of the paintings dating before the 11th century can be seen in several places in the altar region.

Unfortunately, the interior has preserved little of its original splendor. The frescoes in the main body of the church and in the narthex were whitewashed and a minaret was built on the top of one of the cupolas. The Turkish mimbar (pulpit) still stands inside the church.
