There are lots of lakes in Alaska...so many that a lot aren't even named, I don't think. But Lake Louise is HUGE & a small community/resort area is around it. There's some lodges right on the water and a state recreation area. This is why I'm putting it in a "things to do". The recreation area is popular in both the summer and the winter because of the lake. In the summer, there's swimming (that's what it says anyway...not to sure how often that's utilized), fishing, boating and camping. In the winter, it's a good snowmachining/snowmobiling place. There isn't all the much information about this place online and maybe that's because from what I can tell, the road was recently paved. It goes 19 miles to Lake Louise from the Glenn Highway and as of the 2006 Milepost, that pavement ended at mile 4. The road is in great condition however and you pass 10 named lakes on the way to this main one. Originally, we weren't going to camp at Lake Louise but our first choice (a free campground) was totally occupied so we ended up here. It's really beautiful, there's 60 sites at 2 campgrounds--Army Point & Lake Louise-- after some bug spray & mosquito coils, the experience is even better.

Now, the campsites aren't that comfortable for tents, prepare to move some rocks out of your spine periodically throughout the night. But if you get up early, you may just see some great wildlife. We saw a caribou (in the summer...from what I've read, they just spend the winter there and migrate in the spring/ fall so we may have been lucky) & a fox right near it. Definite moose in the area too. It was quiet, it was pretty & there's definitely plenty to do in the summer. If you don't want to camp, check out these lodges:

Lake Louise Lodge
Evergreen Lodge<---for sale but still operating
The Point Lodge

The state recreation area doesn't have its own website up yet, unfortunately.

Address: Lake Louise, Alaska
Directions: Off the Glenn Highway, turn near mile 160 at the signed turnoff
