Just a couple of miles from Lamberhurst on the Kent/Sussex borders are the remains of a 13th-15th Century Premonstratensian Abbey. The area was landscaped in the 18th century and is now run by English Heritage. Adult entry fee is £3.60 and most areas are accessible by wheelchair but the site says "pushers needed".. so bring a pusher with you! ;))
There is a Dower House and small shop with a very helpful English Heritage member of staff who is extremely knowledgeable and can tell you all about the history of the abbey and makes a fab cup of tea as well!
On a hazy summer's day, there is really no where more sublime than the English countryside with its blue skies, fluffy white clouds, birdsong and ancient monuments. When we visited, the English Heritage guy was astounded to find more than 4 cars in the car park... so if you are looking for somewhere that is crowd-free this is the place to come!
Who needs Easyjet and Stansted Airport when we have places like this on our doorstep?
