"Whoa big fellow!!" Elephant Ride Tip by FlyinFree

Elephant Ride, Chiang Mai: 58 reviews and 104 photos

The Elephant farm tour was well worth doing. The travel agent in the hotel lobby organized the car and driver and an English speaking tour guide for us for surprizingly little money. What a pleasure they were! The elephant farm was interesting and educational. The farms are largely responsible for maintaining the elephants in Thailand. The animals are very expensive to keep and are all but completely replaced in the work force with machines. If the elephant farm tourism dies out, I'm afraid the elephant will die with it as a symbol of Thailand. Never think you or the elephant handler has control of the animal though. If you are riding an elephant thru a jungle path and the animal decides to step off the path to munch a morsel from a nearby tree, you're jolly well gonna sit there 'til he gets through munching. A great experience though. And we bought all the touristy pictures from them. They were inexpensive and great mementos of our trip.
