  Alte Brücke - Heidelberg
by MichaelFalk1969

Heidelberg - though crowded with tourists at any time of the year - still remains an iconic and beautiful destination for foreign and domestic visitors, with plenty of attractions. It is worthwhile to take your time here and not to try to tick off as many sights as possible in a short span of time (as some do). Here is a possible walkthrough (likely duration 3 -4 hours):

A possible entry-point into the Oldtown of Heidelberg would be the pretty Kirchplatz square (with a statue of the Virgin Mary at the

Only a few metres from here the proper Oldtown with the main square, the Townhall and the Heiliggeistkirche (Church of the Holy Ghost) begins. If you visit the church, climb the tower and enjoy the view on the Oldtown and the river Neckar. Just opposite the church, one of the oldest historic buildings of Heidelberg - the Ritterhaus - can be seen (with elaborate sandstone carvings on the front) and the bright red "Meder" house. Follow the "Hauptstrasse", but make a detour to the fantastic baroque Jesuit church. From here, pass the road righthand of the church to the former Jesuit school and the "Karolinum", then right towards the St. Peters Church and the historic University library. Though it is a working library, the exhibition rooms (Manesse collection) are open for visitors and free of charge, with samples of historic books and and handwritings from the collection. Opposite the library is the St. Peters church. Follow the road to the University square, then turn left back to the "Hauptstrasse". Turn left again, until you reach the interesting Palatine museum (Kurpfälzisches Museum). Retrace your steps, then turn left till you reach the riverbank. A few metres to the right, the historic "Alte Brücke" spans the river Neckar. Cross the bridge, then the street, and turn a few metres left for the entrance to the "Philosophenweg". This steep path has several viewpoints with excellent vistas of the Oldtown and the Neckar. When finished, go all the way back to the Kirchplatz, and from there up to the palace ruin (partly destroyed by the French army during an invasion in the 17th century). Inside the palace, the "pharmacy museum" is an interesting detour.
