After Square Tower House you will see on the map three dots of points of interest that has a name “pithouses and villages”, which means you will have three stop. If you did see pithouse at the beginning of Mesa Top Loop, then you can go ahead and skip first stop, because you will see the same stuff: partially underground house of Anasazi. However, second stop will be more interesting because it will show you a new step in Anasazis’ history – crescent-shaped village – early pueblo village. By A.D. 850 most of Mesa verde people were living in surface dwelling instead of pithouses. Adjoining rooms may reflect a greater degree of cooperation required by an expanding population.
