"Metro" Metro Tip by el_ruso

Metro, Moscow: 60 reviews and 114 photos

While in most other places the metro is seen as a utilitarian way to move masses of commuters, in Moscow it was built as a chain of palaces designed to awe visitors from the provinces and serve as a propaganda of Soviet ideals. I would urge all the tourists to visit the metro to enjoy its beauty and historical context.

The most elaborate stations are in the center: Ring line (generally glorifying the Soviet victory in WW II or friendship of Soviet peoples), Tverskaya and Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya lines. Stations built after Stalin are generally a lot less pompous and a lot more simple. The prettiest in my opinion is Novoslobodskaya with several unique stained-glass columns.

The other thing that you will note is that stations are extremely deep. This was done to let them serve as bomb shelters in case of a war, as they have been during the siege of Moscow in 1941.
