"Grand Canal Tour" Canal Grande Tip by SJTravel

Canal Grande, Venice: 205 reviews and 361 photos

If you have about an hour, I definitely recommend enjoying a ride on a Vaporetto, the #1, to have a tour of the Grand Canal. Rick Steves has a pretty good self-guided tour for the #1 if you happen to have his book. If not, its fine just to go on the vaporetto and see the entire length of the Grand Canal. Rick Steves recommends starting at Ferrovia, but I really recommend starting at Piazalle Roma which is the stop before Ferrovia...this way you will have a better chance of getting one of the seats in the front of the Vaporetto so that you can see most of the sights without somebody or the Vaporetto itself, blocking your view. Funny because while I was doing this, a family came aboard and had the same idea (to get on at Piazalle Roma and take Rick Steves tour as well). It may be a little more difficult to go on this tour during peak times because of the crowds. I recommend going really early or after 6PM. I went after 6PM and the canal was bustling with people but the vaporetto was not crowded at all. It was just perfect. And at that time, the sun was not too heavy and it gave the canal a beautiful glow. The Grand Canal is so beautiful on this ride and from the Vaporetto you will be able to see all three of the bridges that cross the Grand Canal. While everyone else is jumping on and off the vaporetto to get to and from the different places along the canal, you will be able to just enjoy the view and take in the sights.
