Ross Bay Cemetery is a great example of the English garden style of cemeteries and one of Canada's oldest. It is located near the sea, and its numerous trees and graves marked with marble, sandstone and granite monuments make it a very interesting and enchanting place to walk. Among its most famous residents you will find beloved BC artist Emily Carr, Sir James Douglas, the first governor of British Columbia, and Robert Dunsmuir, the man for whom Craigdarroch Castle was built.
Historic guided tours are offered every Sunday at 2:00 pm, covering such topics as "Gossip in the Graveyard", a tour about the many scoundrels, characters and eccentrics buried at Ross Bay Cemetery, "Literary Lapses", the Emily Carr tour, the Freemasons tour, and "Murder Most Foul", a tour that takes you to the graves of murderers and their victims. Tours cost $5 - check out the Website to see the complete schedule or to download a self-guided tour map.
