The steps of the Parthenon, with tourists
by mikey_e

No explanation of this ancient site is needed. That is, you should get an explanation of what the Parthenon is and its history, but there are plenty of people and guidebooks that can do it far better than I can in this small space. This is, more than any other site, the image of Athens known the world over and no one can be said to have visited Athens without having seen the Parthenon. It is wise to go early in the morning, especially in the summer, as the tourist crowds and the heat will make seeing it later on nearly impossible and possibly damaging to your health. The Parthenon is awe-inspiring and requires more than just a few minutes to absorb its glory and the ingenuity of the ancients who built such a massive and beautiful monument in the 5th century BCE. The scaffolding and restoration workers detract a bit from the atmosphere, but its something you just have to live with.
