Another of England's truly historic cities with a famous cathedral that has the highest spire in the country, Salisbury is a cosy city with lots to see. It started its life as Old Sarum and you can still see the remains of that fortification on the outskirts of the city. Then the city was moved to were we know it today, and the cathedral which today houses one of only three copies of Magna Carta was built. A really good way to see the cathedral is from the Water Meadows nearby, where you can stroll along the fields full of sheep and yet be in the city. This is where Constable painted his famous "Salisbury Cathedral" from. There are also several good museums in Salisbury, telling you about the many neolithic stone monuments on the Salisbury plain and this also makes the town an excellent base four touring the Wiltshire countryside with treasures such as Stonehenge and Avebury nearby.

Address: Salisbury
