"A postcard from auntie in Switzerland..." Colditz Things to Do Tip by sourbugger

Colditz is delightful little town, deep i the heart of what was East Germany. It may be relatively unknown in Germany itself, but the castle is known to millions in Britain and elsewhere through many books and films.

The castle served as a high-security prisoner of war camp, housing prisoners (mainly airmen) who had already escaped from elsewhere.

The tales of tunnels, disguises and deceptions are known to legions of schoolboys.

I visited the place a few years back, and was imprssed by the 'Escape Museum' and the guided tour of parts of the castle.

The ingenuity of these guys was amazing. When Colditz was finally relieved, the incomeing troops were amazed to find an almost ready glider built in the attic area of the castle - and it would have flown if the opportunity presented itself !

The town itself is also worth a couple of hours if you are in the area.
