Mumbai also known as Bombay.
Bollywood capital of Hindi movies !
I had seen enough Hindi movies to watch another movie when I was there.
So, for me to reach Mumbai was to see the Victoria Terminus (the Marathi name is Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus) & a day trip to Elephanta Island.
Mumbai is spread out, so many things to see.
My choice was to stick around Victoria Terminus, night & day or rather morning & early evening as I caught another train to my next destination on that same day.
Yes, I travel fast !
Do you have any issue with that ?
Here's my observation.
Mumbai is busy, all the times !
I was walking around for a few hours, I managed to get good glimpses of people playing cricket, vendors selling their stuffs, traffics here, there & everywhere !
Honing like crazy !
It's funny seeing a sign 'No Horn Please' like anybody would abide by this.
Victoria Terminus (Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus) is a historical train station.
It's one of the busiest stations in India with surburban & long distance trains arriving/departing from here.
Built in 1888, it has Venetian Gothic style of architecture. The building exhibits a fusion of influences from Victorian Italianate Gothic Revival architecture and traditional Indian architecture.
Elephanta Island is an island about 1 hour by a boat ride.
10 km away by sea.
Away from the hustle & bustle of Mumbai city.
It's just a good getaway for a few hours for me.
Seeing Gate Of India was great as I was boarding the boat.
On Elephanta Island is also known as Place of Caves & it's what it is.
In ancient times it's known as Gharapuri.
The Portuguese gave the name Elephanta when they saw a statue of elephant near the entrance.
The ancient caves on this island were probably dated between 450 and 750 AD.
The caves are mostly dedicated to Hindu God Siva with many depictions of him.
It's a place not to be missed & certainly a place where you can get away from the hectic of Mumbai.
Directions: Mumbai has easy access from/to places throughout India.
My advice is get a train to reach Victoria Terminus as the building is historical.
To reach Elephanta Island, easy...
Many boats depart from Gate of India.
