"Chennai & Mamallapuram..." India Things to Do Tip by coceng

India Things to Do: 1,031 reviews and 1,690 photos

India is a sub-continent, a huge country.
Obviously there are lots of things to do & lots of places to see !
I was there for 1 month but of course I couldn't see everything.
Nevertheless I shall list the places according to my own itineraries; Places that I like, places that I didn't spend too much at & places that merit at least a few days exploration !

Here goes :

First Chennai.
I only planned to arrive in Chennai because of 2 things :
The start of my journey throughout India simply because I managed to get a cheap air ticket from Kuala Lumpur.
Also, Near to Chennai, there's a place called Mamallapuram.

In Chennai, at least I got the first impression of India as I got out from the airport.
People everywhere !
I didn't have the time to see The Colonial Quater or even see the beaches.
I was there for one place : Mamallapuram.

Mamallapuram is an extensive site.
I was there just for a few hours.
A day trip from Chennai.
It's about 60 km from Chennai & was a port city in the 7th century.
There are many ancient monuments here & most are rock-cut.
The monuments are spread out so walking, by auto or by bicycle is the best way to explore this area.
These cave-temples attract locals & tourists alike.
It's said that some of these monuments are not being excavated as they are in the sea, as Mamallapuram is situated by the sea.
Underwater excavations are still being carried out.
It's worth going to Mamallapuram because the town is pretty laid back so unlike the hustle & bustle of Chennai !
Hire a taxi or an auto would be nice to reach this place.
Make sure you negotiate with the drivers about the fare, plus waiting time !
Don't let the driver simply take you anywhere they like.
Plan your itineraries with them.
It's an extensive site & you MUST see all the monuments.
