Yuriy Kulchytsk- owner of first Vienna coffeeshop

Two cultural traditions are inseparable from Lviv, one of them is coffee drinking. Coffee shops are everywhere. Coffee goes with and is a part of everything here: morning awakening, a quick stopover or lunch, a chat with a friend, discussions and political debates, music and arts sessions, you name it. Coffee is the synonym of lifestyle.

The coffee drinking is deeply rooted in the history. It?s connected with our countryman, Yuriy Kulchytsky (aka Franz-Josef Kulczycki, Kolschitzky), a merchant from Sambir (Lviv oblast), who is believed to be the first person to open the first coffeeshop in Vienna (Hof zur Blauen Flasche (House under the Blue Bottle) in 1683, using coffee beans left by the retreating Ottoman Turks.
