Nikolaevskaya Sq. (now Ivan Franko) has been built on the territory of the Mering?s estate pond. After the estate has been sold the pond has been pebbled, and several fine buildings have been built in 1898, including the first state or art theatre building by Bradtmann and Schleifer. The theatre was named after its director and actor Solovtsov, who came to Kyiv from Moscow with seasonal theater performances in 1891 and stayed for good. For twenty years it?s been a beloved place and the center of Kyiv cultural and theatrical life.

The original (two-storey) building built in classical style and a lot of décor has been ?adjusted? to the needs of the Lenin Theater by taking down a lot of ?unsuitable bourgeois? details and adding the third floor.

Several interesting and touching things to notice here: a chalice-shaped fountain erected in 1900 (one of five left); a monument to a retired theatre actor and his dachshund; the former gymnasium (red building to the right) where in 1918 studied ?the genius of 20 century ballet? Serg Lifar.
