Hans and I had an amazing adventure as we went on a ISLAND HOPPING SAILING CRUISEin the Greek Islands known as the Cyclades Group.
Our journey started at a Marina near Athens on Sunday morning, May 27. There were three boats altogether, with three captains and 27 passengers. Our boat the PYTH had Hans and I, Stephanie and Gerry, Carmen (Carmela71) and Stace (Beachdog), Janet ( Janetanne ), Sandra ( Salsagirl), Ove (OH_DK) and our captain Pavlos.
Our boats, Bavaria50 sailing yachts, were 50 feet, had five cabins, a galley with mini fridge & stove-top, captain's area ( for his radio & maps) and three small bathrooms with showers.
We travelled an average of 4 to 5 hours per day and reached a different island each day. We were able to visit the islands of Kea, Serifos, Nisos Sifnos, Ios and Santorini - our final destination. The islands were not far from each other, so we had the opportunity to spend some time on each one of them. In the evening we all went to dinner on the island that we were visiting for the day. Usually we broke into little groups and went to different restaurants, as we all had different likes and not everyone wanted to eat at the same time.
Usually we stayed in the area where the boats were, but a couple of times we explored a different area, like in KEA, most of us took a taxi to a lovely little town up the hill (Otzias)where we had dinner at a local Greek restaurant. And on the island of IOS, some rented cars for the afternoon and explored the island where Homer is believed to be buried.
My favourite time, was in the evening, when the boats were tied together. On our boat, we would sometimes play card games and have a nice bottle of local wine and just watch all the activity around the marinas. On one island, Nisos Sifnos, we had a dance party on the cement wharf in front of our boats, where Galatea gave us Greek dance lessons and we danced to the sound of Greek music coming from her CD player. What a wonderful time that was.
