"The Town of Bauge" Baugé Things to Do Tip by hquittner
Baugé Things to Do: 2 reviews and 2 photos
The town lies above the Couesnon River and contains some old mansions as well as the chateau, repictured here. We were not able to photograph its other main attraction, a reliquary double transverse cross (a shape adopted in the 16C as the heraldic Cross of Lorraine). The cross containing a piece( second largest in France after Sacre Coeur) of the True Cross was brought back from the Crusades in 1241 by a knight who received it as a reward. It was protected for a time in Angers Castle and was bought during the Revolution by the Daughters of the Heart of Mary and remains in their chapel. (We were not allowed to photograph it). It was richly decorated by the goldsmith of Charles V and is pictured in the Apocalypse Tapestries and well worth seeing as a tourist pilgrimage. The tourist office will point out other old sites to see in the town. They referred us to a view of our first dolmen too.
