The rectangular Sacred Lake is located to the south of the girdle wall of Ramesses II. It is considered to be dug by Tuthmosis III. It is lined with stone and provided with stairways descending into the water.

It measures some 120 meters by 77 meters. The lake symbolizes the waters of the primordial ocean. The water of the lake comes from the Nile.

The lake was used by ancient Egyptian priests for purification of souls. Water from the lake, filled with groundwater, was used by the priests for ritual ablutions and other temple needs, and was also home to the sacred geese of Amun.
