The Turkish built the lighthouse during the occupation although the old harbour wall, which you walk along to reach the lighthouse, is Venetian. The lighthouse has long since been made redundant and a larger port, which surrounds it, is in operation and accepts all manner of large craft, including daily vessels from Piraeus.
Unfortunately the lighthouse has suffered neglect and upon reaching the entrance you are greeted with swathes of rubbish, which bank up inside the lighthouse and a lot of graffiti. Its nothing a few large bin bags and a big bucket of soapy water wouldn't fix but it gives you a twinge of sadness seeing this great old building, which has served the town for so many years, in such a bad way. Amazingly it looked as though you were able to climb the tight staircase but I decided against it. Look back across the harbour to the restaurants for a lovely view. I love lighthouses, every town should have a lighthouse, even those in land.
