Founded in 1919 by Americans, the AUC has become one of the best universities in the Middle East. The main university building overlooking Tahrir Square, seen in the attached photograph, is an old neo-Moorish royal palace built in 1870 and named Khairy Pacha Palace. It is among only a handful of 19th century palaces to have survived from the once many surrounding Midan Ismailia (now Tahrir Square). As the University grew, it expanded in adjacent buildings, including the former Greek School of Cairo which was acquired by the university in 1964. In 2008, the AUC moved most of its faculty to a new campus on the outskirts of the city on the Muqattam Hill, in an area known as New Cairo, but Khairy Palace continues to be the headquarters.
