"Victory Gate" Portsmouth Things to Do Tip by Jenniflower

Portsmouth Things to Do: 130 reviews and 270 photos

This is the impressive gate you enter when you visit the historic dockyard.

I simply LOVE the nondescript old wooden door on the one side, with the knocker! (crazy about doors!)

This gate has been here since 1711, this date also commemorating Queen Anne's visit to the dockyard that year.

It was called Main Gate prior to this, and was a lot narrower back then.

It had a wrought iron arch running between the two pillars until it was widened during WWII so big vehicles could drive through here.

Not in any way ostentatious, it is a formidable and impressive gate non the less.
