"Duomo Museum" Il Duomo - Santa Maria del Fiore Tip by Peterodl
Il Duomo - Santa Maria del Fiore, Florence: 264 reviews and 538 photos
The Duomo Museum (Museum of the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore) is located just behind the Duomo. Walk inside and you can find a treasure trove of artifacts that were associated with the Duomo through the centuries.
Inside there is the wooden statue by Donatello of Mary Magdeline that was washed away in a mudflow in the 1966 but was found relativly unharmed buried in mud.
The last sculpture by Michelangelo. His "Pieta" he had carved for his own tomb was left unfinished with what is believed to be a self-portrait of Michelangelo in his 70s.
Also in the museum are the original bronze "Gates of Paradise" doors by Gheberti from the Baptistry
It is all very well presented. You can take an audio tour which gives useful and interesting information on the history of the various objects. I would advise anyone to make this a must stop while in Florence.
