St Baaf's Cathedral (8:30am - 6pm) is nothing special on the outside but inside it is quite something. As well as an amazing interior, St Baaf's also contains De Aanbidding van het Lams God (the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb). It is a medieval oil painting (one of the earliest of all known oil paintings) by Jan Van Eyck in 1432 as an altarpiece with 20panels. It represents a golrification of Christ's death - the lamb symbolising Christ's sacrifice... There is a panel which has a naked Adam and Eve. The Autrian Emporer, Joseph II, was horrified by this panel and had it replaced with clothed versions. The painting then went off to Paris during the French Revolution and was later stolen by teh Germans andw as concealed in an Austrian salt mine during WWII ! Now back in St Baafs the painting has it's original nude Adam and Eve panel but within the cathedral there is still the replacement/clothed panel of them.
You can expect queues to see the painting. adult/concession/child E2.50/1.75/1.25
