The best preserved Roman Ruins in Morocco are at Volubilis, near the city of Meknes. Most visitors to Volubilis also visit the nearby town of Moulay Idriss, Morocco's holiest city and the site of an important shrine. Volubilis lies about 1 km off the main N13 road, about 30 km north of Menkes. Entrance to the site is very good value - 10 Dh per person - and it's open from daily from 9 to 12 and 2.30 to 6.

Inside is a good selection of Roman ruins. Highlights are the Basilica, the Capitol and the well preserved triumphal arch, while some of the most rewarding sites are those away from the main paths. The names of each building or monument is given in French and Arabic so you do get a good idea of what a particular building or ruin was used for. Guides are available for the tour but we didn't find it necessary as there was plenty of detail in our guidebook.
