In the northwest part of the old town, on the north side of the broad Aghiou Dimitriou Str. at its intersection with Filimonos Dragoumi str., is an imposing building now known as the Dioikitiro which houses the Ministry of Macedonia Thrace. It was originally built in 1891 by the Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli on the site of the old Turkish Konak to house the Turkish governor's offices.
