"Spend time at Palenque...." Mexico Favorite Tip by jstrudwick

Favorite thing: Spend time at Palenque. Surrounded by trees and greenery, the setting of these Mayan ruins is only surpassed by Tikal in Guatemala. They are well preserved and less visited than other sites closer to the main tourist beach resorts. The 'lid of Palenque', buried in a tomb under the pyramid is superb and comes with the added intrigue of trying to work out how they go it in there! If you want to buy a hammock, head for Merida. Silver jewellery is also good here. The ruins at Chichen Itza, Uxmal and Tuluum are also fantastic and should be visited, but be aware that these attract a lot of tour buses, so get there early or stay overnight.
