Great Wall of China - Mutianyu, Beijing: 92 reviews and 247 photos
The Great Wall at Mutianyu is around 2 hours drive from Beijing and is considered to be one of the lesser visited parts of the wall. On the day I visited however (01/05/07) there were hundreds of Chinese tourists all fighting for their turn to see everything!
It is located in Huairou County 73 kilometers northeast of Beijing, the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall winds through some gorgeous mountains for 2 kilometers and is connected with Juyongguan Pass to the west and Gubeikou to the east.
Construction of Mutianyu section was started in the Northern Qi Dynasty (550 - 577) and was restored in the early Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). In 1982, a new program began to establish the Mutianyu Great Wall as a Tourist Area and was finished in 1986. There are natural springs throughout the area which feed a great variety of plants and trees and over 96% of Mutianyu is covered with greenery, more than any other section of the Great Wall. This creates an amazing landscape to view the wall with, and to create that perfect picture.
The Great Wall at Mutianyu is unique from the other sections in the following ways. It is built mainly from granite, the walls are 7-8m high and 4-5m wide, and has 22 watchtowers along the 2km stretch which is considerably more than the other sections. Because of the amount of watchtowers, height, width and the way the watchtowers are constructed suggest that this section was extremely important to the military defence and that soldiers defended both sides of the wall.
There are two ways to get to the top of the wall, walk (1000 steps up) or a cable car. To get down there are these options plus a taboggan ride (very fun!!). Be aware that it can get very hot in Beijing in Spring and Summer so wear appropriate clothing, sunscreen and a hat!
