  Steamrollers line up for judging

The English are still very fond of their local fete/fayre/fair type of thing. Even quite small villages have them (usually in late spring or early summer....although there is a Christmas variety). You'll find stalls of various types (handicrafts, games, a coconut shy, cakes, tombola etc etc). Some, however, are quite specialised; the steam rally is one type of 'special' fair.

There are many English people (I suspect mainly men) who are absolutely fascinated by steam machinery of all types. Consequently, various 'steam rallies' are held around the country. Here one can observe and wonder not only at the beautifully restored working steam machinery but also at the fascinating men (and some women, I suppose) whose life's work this restoration and maintenance is. And, to be fair, it is interesting.......

Steam rallies will always have the usual stalls as well, so it's worth popping in to visit one if you happen to be in the right place at the right time. The photo is from a May rally in Oxfordshire; plenty of machinery to see, plenty of smoke/steam, lots of whistling (from the machines!) and even some very slow machine-racing trundling around a grassy field.
