Victoria Arcade: "A fine old arcade." Ryde Shopping Tip by planxty

I'm not much of a shopper, but I couldn't resist including a tip about this fine old arcade in Union Street.
It was designed by a chap called Thomas Saunders, the publican of the Vine Inn, who also plied his trade as a builder. When it was opened, he received no payment from the developer and this was the last building he ever undertook, preferring the more steady money of the licensed trade. It does, however, stand as a fine memorial to him and is today filled with all sorts of shops - records, books, bric-a-brac and souvenirs predominating.
I was particularly taken with the delightfully named Uriah's Heap (pictured).
A nice place for a stroll.
