My favourite spot in Zadar! The sea organ, an architectural object by Nikola Bašic, is an amazing place to sit and relax after a long day. We came here twice, once on a stormy afternoon, the other time in the evening to see the sunset because we were told that's what you do when you are a tourist in Zadar. ;)
Underneath the steps that you find at the northern end of Riva there are 35 tubes like in a church organ. The waves turn these into a very creative musical instrument. When sitting there you hear melodies, sounds, the wind and the waves, it's wonderful! Sometimes it sounds like whales singing, sometimes the sounds turn very loud and you know it's time to get up because there's a big wave coming! I could have sat there for ages just relaxing and listening... Don't miss this spot when you are in Zadar!
When we watched the sunset here, the moment the sun vanished into the sea I thought it would have been great if the music stopped right then. Sun gone - Music gone. Now this would be even more impressive, wouldn't it? So all you sea organ constructors out there, maybe next time you could build in this little surprise?!! ;)
You can listen to the organ here.
Directions: At the far end of Riva, where the cruise ships stop.
