Domhugel (Cathedral Hill) is the aptly named rise on which you get three for the price of one. Looking from Domplatz, on your left is Mariendom Cathedral, in the middle is St. Severus church and the old fort, including St. Peters, is on your right.
The cathedral's recorded history dates from a chapel founded by Boniface in 742 or thereabouts. The 70 Geraden steps leading up to the cathedral are from the 14th century, as are the choir and the ornately decorated portal.
Inside, worthy of your attention, are the stained glass windows, a Romanesque stucco madonna, the bronze candelabrum "Wolfram" (1160) and the 14th century choir stalls.
The St. Severus church originally had a monastic function and dates from 1280 but there was a prior Benedictine convent going back to before the bones of St. Severus (bishop of Ravenna) were transferred here in 836. Today his sarcophagus is one of the main attractions of the church and his life is depicted on its sides.
