Until 1991 the Blloku area was restricted to the same elite group of party members who were allowed to drive the nation's six hundred Mercedes cars. It was strictly off limits to the plebs, and so when it was opened to the public it created a huge buzz of interest. Now it has become the coolest part of Tirana, where all the coolest clubs, bars, cafes and restaurants vie with each other for your custom.
You can also find some classic buildings here, including Enver Hoxha's former residence.
