Like some strange mountain Midas, the sulphur-rich waters of the Rio de la Cuevas turn anything left in them to golden stone. The path down to the natural bridge over the river and the ruined spa that stands beneath is lined with stalls selling all manner of things that have been left in the water in this way. Once through that, the bridge and the spa are an extraordinary sight, as is the petrified ochre-gold waterfall below the ruins. In 1965 an avalanche destroyed the hotel that housed the spa's clients. The small chapel you see was first built in 1902 and although it had suffered damage from avalanches in the past, the one that destroyed the hotel left it undamaged.
Guide books may tell you that you can walk across the bridge. That information is out of date, the bridge is now closed to tourists.
Directions: Puente del Inca is about 160 km from Mendoza. The trans-Andes bus passes through but doesn't stop so you will need to make a seperate journey to see it if you are crossing to Chile from Mendoza.
