The new national Theatre was constructed in 2000-2002 on plans of the Architect Mária Siklós. The beautiful original National theatre built in eclectic style was destroyed by the communists in the 60`s with the exuse that they needed the place for the metro. See on link:

The theatre was built in a very peculiar neo-eclectic style, critized heavily by the chamber of architects, but most of the people like this new building. Originally it should have been built on the Erzsébet square(see tip) but than it remained a park with a big hole (that would have been the garage of the theatre). I think, it`s a big luck. In this way the city centre has a new well kept park, and the place, where the new theatre was built, wich was abandoned before, started to improve very rapidly. Only 3 years later also the construction of the Palace of Arts was finished (see later the relative tip)
