The museum of lace making is the best way to learn about this nearly forgotten artwork. Laces have been made by Burano women since ages ! The stitch is unique for Burano, called punta in aria (something like air stitch). ! There is a lovely legend about it, how it was “invented”, but I’d like to refer to Boris for this description.
The museum, housed in the Gothic Palazzo del Podesta, was originally a school for lace making (Scuola de Merletti), after this art tended to fade out in late 19th century. Later (around 1980) the most precious pieces haven been collected to be presented in the museum now. Upstairs in the museum, women who still are able to stitch punta in aria, can be watched working on it. It is good to watch them for a while, as then it becomes very much obvious how expensive a piece in Burano lace is – and maybe helps from buying some of the cheap Chinese crap in most of the shops.
Entrance fee (as of May 2007): 4 Euro for a single ticket; it is included however in Venice Orange Card or in the Venice Museum Pass. Children up to 5 and disabled persons have free entrance.
For better planning: the museum is closed on Tuesdays !
Opening hours: Wed – Mo: 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. (April to October; in winter it closes at 4 p.m.).
